Douglas Raymond Dieckhoff was born on May 23, 1919 in Neenah, Wisconsin. He graduated from Neenah High School in 1936 and enlisted in the Navy on May 18, 1938. He reported for duty on the USS Utah on January 5, 1940. Douglas was killed in action on December 7, 1941 during the attack on Pearl Harbor. His remains were recovered and returned to his family in Wisconsin. He was survived by his father, mother, three brothers and two sisters.


Douglas was the first service person from Neenah killed in WW II, and he was honored by the American Legion Post 33 of Neenah which added his name to their designation as the Hawley-Dieckhoff Post.
